10 Fire Prevention Tips

Smoke alarm

  • Install one smoke alarm per floor, including the basement.
  • Make sure your smoke alarm is properly positioned to avoid unnecessary alarms.
  • Change it according to the replacement date indicated by the manufacturer, located on the side. If no date appears on the smoke alarm, replace it as soon as possible.
  • Check your smoke alarms and change the batteries twice a year (at every time change).

Evacuation plan

  • Identify two possible exits.
  • Draw your escape plan.
  • Identify an outdoor meeting point and notify all occupants of the residence.
  • Repeat the steps to be taken during a fire evacuation with all occupants.
  • If you have young children, assign one adult per child to pick him or her up and proceed to the meeting point.

How to evacuate your home

  • Close every door behind you as you leave to prevent the flames and smoke from spreading to other rooms or homes.
  • If there is smoke, get down on all fours.
  • Call 9-1-1 once you are outside your home.

Smokers’ items

  • Do not throw cigarette butts in flower pots or mulch.
  • Place them in a metal container.

Sources of heat

  • Keep curtains and furniture at least 10cm away from radiators or electric baseboards, or any other heat source.

Electricity

  • Have a professional electrician do the electrical installation in your home.
  • Use electrical appliances that are approved in Canada and bear the CSA and ULC symbols.

Carbon monoxide

  • One carbon monoxide detector per residence is mandatory, it must be installed near the rooms.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s standards for the installation of your carbon monoxide detector.

Prevent cooking fires

  • When cooking, never leave your food unattended.
  • Never heat oil in a pot for frying, regardless of the type of pot; use a thermostatic fryer.
  • Never extinguish a cooking fire with water; instead, smother the fire with a lid.

Chimney cleaning

  • Have your chimney inspected and swept by an expert once a year before heating season. This is also recommended for pellet stove pipes.

Hot ashes

  • Let the hot ashes cool outside in a metal container with a metal lid for a minimum of 72 hours.
  • Place the container on a non-combustible surface.
  • Wait at least seven days before transferring the ashes to the garbage bin.
